“And God has placed in the Church……helpers.” (1 Corinthians 12:27 RSV)
Lunches for people on their own in the new Foyer at River of Life Christian Centre
One of the most vital and yet often unnoticed ministries in the Church is that of the “helper”. Very often functioning in the background with little recognition for what they do, such people are invaluable to the work of God and to the ministry of the Church.
At River of Life Church we have an army of wonderful Christians who fulfil the role of “helper”- from doing the washing up to putting out and later clearing chairs, to serving in the Church Library; sound technicians on the Sound Desk who oversee the sound system for our Auditorium, and indeed many others - the list is endless.
Of course, the link between serving and Christian discipleship is inescapable. The Gospel of Matthew chapter 23 and verse 11 records the words of Jesus when He said “The greatest among you will be your servant, for those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Jesus came to serve. Matthew’s Gospel again records His words in chapter 20 and verse 28 when He said “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave--- just as the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
In reading these verses from the Bible perhaps you might like to think of the ways in which you might be able to serve God, even if it is in a small way- just to be “a helper…”
